Dr Nēpia Mahuika is from Ngati Porou and has connections to Ngati Maniapoto. He teaches history at the University of Waikato, and specialises in oral history, Māori, iwi, and Indigenous histories, ethics, and historical Methodology and Theory. Nepia completed his PhD thesis in an examination of the differences between the studies and disciplines of Oral History and Oral Tradition. He has research interests in histories of martial arts, indigenous legal histories, makutu and indigenous histories of health and well being.
